Introducing NewEd!

Are you graduating soon? Will you be stepping into your first classroom this upcoming Fall? Are you completely ecstatic but nervous at the same time?

The first years of teaching are a whirlwind and will certainly be a challenge, but you shouldn't do it alone. After all, in college you had the help and support from your fellow SVEA members. Now that you are beginning your teaching career, the next step is to join NewEd. NewEd is a group within the VEA specifically designed to provide a support system for new educators.

We are here to help you by not only providing a number of resources and workshops for your first years of teaching but also by building a community of new educators who support each other. In the upcoming year we are planning a number of events including various community service events and gatherings where we share resources, relax, and have fun!

Please fill out the Google Form, the link below, to provide us with more information on how we can help you in your first years of teaching! We can’t wait to hear from you and see you at our upcoming events! If you have any further questions please feel free to contact a NewEd member at newed.va@gmail.com or your SVEA Liaison, Katelyn Anderson (kande046@odu.edu).

Check out the Candidates for President and Vice President!

Learn more about the candidates running for President and Vice President for the SVEA Board of Directors 2016-2017! We'll be voting on these offices as well as other board offices at Convention March 18th & 19th.

Candidate for President
Coty L. Frye

My name Is Coty Frye. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English and a minor in Psychology. My focus is in Secondary Education. I want to teach Middle School English, Language Arts. I am actively involved in my university chapter of SVEA @ VCU. I currently serve as the Co-Chair of my SVEA chapter’s Social Committee. In that capacity, I along with a fellow member work to get social, and Professional Development events together to help recruit members and keep our chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University, up and running. I would be honored to serve as your state SVEA President, as I will always put members at the forefront of everything I do to make the Student Virginia Education Association, and the Virginia Education Association the best it can be! I will be your voice, and advocate for our profession and OUR FUTURE STUDENTS. I will make sure that as an association we continue to Put Kids First, because our future students are more than test scores. Learning needs to be student centered and not data-driven because our students come from culturally-diverse backgrounds and a “One-Size Fits-All” approach does NOT work. Our instruction needs to be effective and as unique as our FUTURE STUDENTS are and will be.

Candidate for Vice-President
Yancey "Catie" Kruger

Yancey “Catie” Kruger is a sophomore at Radford University studying Elementary Education. She currently serves as the underclassman member at large for the state board and as her local chapter’s historian. This spring she was given the opportunity to participate in the National Education Association’s Student Organizing Fellowship. As a member of SVEA she has loved getting to meet other pre service professionals, she was able to attend VEA lobby day to speak to officials about current issues in education, and develop as an educator. If elected, Catie hopes to continue establishing and growing connections with other pre service educators and grow SVEA’s membership across the state.

Outreach to Teach: Student Members, We Need YOUR Help!

Calling All SVEA Members!

We need YOUR help designing activities for Outreach to Teach!

This year, we will be at College Park Elementary in Virginia Beach from 11:30AM to 3:00PM on March 18th. In order to invite increased participation and ownership of our Outreach to Teach event, we are asking SVEA members from all across the state to submit task proposals. A task is a 10-minute, educational (but fun!) activity that fourth and fifth graders will complete in groups of six.

If you have a great idea for a task, please fill out this Task Proposal Form, including the Task Planning Template, and e-mail it to VP Katelyn Anderson at kande046@odu.edu by UPDATE: February 15th. Task leaders will be notified by February 15th if their task has been chosen for implementation! Feel free to e-mail Katelyn if you have any questions!
