Coty L. Frye |
Greetings SVEA,
My name is Coty Frye, and I am your current SVEA
President. I am honored to be running for re-election as your SVEA President. This leadership position has afforded me the
opportunity to grow and learn as a future educator. I would love the opportunity to represent the
SVEA as your president, for a second term. I am currently a senior at The Virginia State
University, “Hail State, Hail” I’m an English major with a minor in Secondary
Education (6-12). I will continue to put members at the forefront of everything
that I do to ensure that the Student Virginia Education Association the best
that it can be. I will continue to be your advocate, and put kids and OUR
profession, FIRST! I will be your voice because our profession makes all other
professions possible. I will make sure that as an association we continue to “Put
Kids First”. Learning needs to be student centered and not data-driven because
all our students come from culturally-diverse
backgrounds and a “One-Size Fits-All” approach does NOT work. We need to meet our future students where they
are, not where we want them to be. Our instruction needs to be effective and as
unique as our FUTURE STUDENTS are and will be.
Public Education is facing one of its most difficult
times with the appointment of Ms. Betsy Devos. I reaffirm my commitment to you
the members of SVEA, that I will advocate for YOU the members, our association,
and our profession. “Education is not preparation for life; education is life
itself”. John Dewy

Catie Kruger |
Hello all! I am Catie
Kruger and I am super excited to be running for SVEA President this year. I am
currently a junior at Old Dominion University studying Interdisciplinary Studies
with a concentration in Elementary and Primary education. This is my second
year on the SVEA board, and I am currently serving as Vice President. Prior to
that, I served as Underclassmen member at large. Before coming to ODU this
spring, I attended Radford University where I served as Historian for the
2015-2016 year and Underclassmen Rep for the 2014-2015 year. In the spring of
2016 I was lucky enough to be a part of the NEA Student Organizing fellowship,
where I learned all about the NEA Student Programs. In my two years on the
board, I have attended VEA Lobby Day twice, where I got to speak with Virginia
legislators about real issues in public education today. I also have attended
both the VEA Delegate Assembly, a Virginia Board of Education meeting and Reggie
Smith Organizing School this past year. I am so lucky to have all of these
amazing opportunities, and if elected, my goal is to bring even more
opportunities to you. Next year, in addition to being my senior year, it is my
last year before student teaching in grad school so I will be able to be
completely available to you, and your needs because together we can make a
difference.

Riley Moran |
My name is Riley
Moran and I am an Elementary Education Major at Old Dominion University. I have
been an active member of the SVEA for two years now and am looking to further
my participation by running for Vice President. This past year, I acted as the
Vice President of the ODU chapter and the Eastern Region Representative.
Through these positions, I have interacted with many of you, heard your voices
and have done everything in my power to improve your experiences with the SVEA.
I have worked on the state board for a year and have had many ideas along the
way that I was unable to act upon in my position as region rep. I would like to
send out a monthly state newsletter, improve communication between the board
and members, create activities for a week long diversity awareness week in
February, and offer the opportunity for chapters to work together and share
ideas all year long instead of just two days every March. I believe the SVEA
should be a community where members are free to ask questions, bounce ideas off
of each other and be inspired by each other’s successes.
